FAQ

The increasing coverage of gender identity issues has aroused great attention from the public, from the stories of Caitlyn Jenner to the guidance recently published by Trump. At the heart of the issue seems to be a lack of understanding of transgender issues and gender identity.

The followings are some LGBTQ questions that the public have frequently ask about.

  • What is gender binary and gender non-binary?

Gender binary is generally a classification system that separate gender expressions into 2 main categories, male and female (or men and women or masculine and feminine). It may reinforce negative attitudes and bias toward people who born without the mechanism, for example, whose gender identity is incongruent with their birth sex.

While “gender non-binary” mainly describes a group of people who can not simply be defined as men or women. Other terms such as “agender” or “genderqueer” deliver the same message that gender can not be labeled as male or female merely.

  • How to be supportive and respectful towards LGBTQ people?

You may not know what to say to a LGBTQ friend, but that’s okay. Show your support to your friend by respecting their decisions, and ask your friend if they need anything from you. As LGBTQ people are at a higher risk of bullying and harassment, it’s important to stand by them and report to the local relevant department if it is needed. And last but not least, try to understand their feelings as normal people, that means a lot to them.
